About Søren Kierkegaard
Søren Kierkegaard (1813 – 1855) found Copenhagen a rather mediocre city and yet he spent most of his life here. Born into a rich family, he did not have to work to earn his living. He was brought up to become introspective and passionate at the same time, and today he is recognized as the greatest and most original philosopher Denmark has ever had. His books, e.g. Either-Or (1843), are demanding and thought provoking, yet his popularity has never been higher.
His first book was a heavy criticism of Hans Christian Andersen’s outlook on life, it carries the strange title: The Papers from a Man who is still Alive.
These past couple of years discussions about how to understand Kierkegaard have filled the Danish newspapers…..and the debate continues…
